As tempting as it is to throw on sweatpants and Ugg boots before jumping on an early flight, remember: you never know who you'll run into at an airport (thank you, Tyra Banks). But it's true! I'm a little crazy so in addition to planning my outfits for vacation, I plan my airport outfits too.
I used to go a little overboard with dressing up while in flight. I don't know who I thought I was running into, realistically. As I get older, I prioritize versatility and comfort above all else. A pair of jeans and a blazer I can wear multiple times? Shoes I can walk around in all day and not get blisters? A resounding YES!
Guess what? You don't have to sacrifice comfort! In fact, dressed down and casual yet polished and put together IS possible and looks so chic. Look no further than '90s supermodel airport style for proof. Let's get into it.
On the day I arrive, I try to wear something that I'd be comfortable going to a restaurant or somewhere to meet friends right away. A comfy pair of jeans and a white tee dressed up with an oversized blazers and easy slip-ons fits the bill for me. If you're iffy on wearing jeans, leggings will do the trick with a longer tee under the blazer. I never travel without my versatile Goyard tote — it fits my laptop, and I can throw a smaller going out bag inside of it too! Any large tote that you can toss a few things in that won't take up room in your suitcase is a great option.
I like jewelry while traveling but not too much. Pared backed statement earrings (the Bottega Drop earrings that go with everything, for instance) or some delicate necklaces are a good way to go. And a watch, of course.
Heading home is a slightly different situation (for me). I'm usually just heading straight home (hopefully!) or maybe to grab a bite to eat somewhere. I likely haven't washed my hair for a few days, so a baseball cap it is! I can't express how grateful I am that this became acceptable and stylish because I love to go an extra day without doing my hair.
No matter which order you wear them in, an oversized sweater and some tailored elastic waist pants are fantastic choices for the airport. Elastic waist pants, like leggings, are effortless like sweatpants but without feeling sloppy or disheveled (don't get me wrong, I do love some sweatpants every now and then).
